ALL GIRLS SHOULD LEARN SCIENCE BY JOHN OGAH
I have never seen someone as intentional about the girl child than the way Mrs. Chioma Ezedi Chukwu is. She’s not trying to make a name, but trying to make a difference, more especially in technology.

ALL GIRLS SHOULD LEARN SCIENCE BY JOHN OGAH

I remembered trying to probe her in my normal way of ‘looking for her trouble and admiring her.’ I asked her why she did not create a program to engage boys. At that time, I felt all she cared about was girls! I was beginning to think she was a strong believer of feminism.
If it was not an initiative called “Technovation girls” she was working on, then it would have to be “SheTechs!” And as God would have it, He decided to go the opposite direction by giving her boys who she gave birth to. Is God not wonderful? 😂
Continuing on our “Be a woman” series, Mrs. Chioma Ezedi Chukwu takes the spotlight on been a woman who is worthy of emulation. Over the years, the stereotype that technology can only be handled by male folks has been gradually squashed by women such as Chioma. Not only is she paving the way for women to take the front role in science and technology, but she is as well training young girls to see the possibilities that their gender can host.
Like I said in one of the articles on “Be a woman” series, “The possibilities of God is not limited to a particular gender.”
The world is going so digital that in some matter of years, we would have to be ‘so’ dependent on technology “to survive.” It is quite important that we have individuals who can posses the knowledge and skills to handle these times. However, this is not the case.
Women are not taking up technology Jobs as a result of the workplace been dominated by males. Previous research showed that women make up 47% out of all employed adults in the United States. However, according to the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT), 25% of these women only took up computing roles in 2015.
According to data from the National Science Foundation, only 38% of women who took computer science as a major are working in the field compared to 53% of men despite the increasing rate of STEM jobs.
Let me explain in simple terms. For example, If the number of people in the world is just 100 people, only 15% which are women out of this 100 people get to work and make their mark and if 100 people live in a world that is full of computers, only two(2) out of five(5) women get to know and operate a computer!
The coming years that will meet us will meet us with problems looking for technological answers. However, you might want to ask me: “John, what concerns women and technology?”
Now, imagine a family living in a world where the only means of survival is technology, the man dies suddenly leaving behind two kids who are not up to four years old. How do you think the wife will cope trying to get money to feed her kids when the only jobs available can only be performed by individuals who are skilled in IT (INFORMATION AND TECHNOLOGY)?
If you are reading this and you’re planning of having a daughter, please ensure she knows about Science, Technology and Mathematics. Am I saying all girls should be science students? No. However, all girls should have, at least, a bit of science in them.
Whether she wants to study theatre arts or wants to be a lawyer, ensure she is scientifically driven. This is because the problems which will emerge in the future will need scientific and logical answers to solve.
Mrs. Chioma, probably, having a foresight on what the future will be like and making researchs backed up by strong convictions, must have seen it necessary for women to take their place in technology, and what better way would she have done it but by building technological capacity and as well, building the foundation for young girls to explore the resources that technology has to offer in changing their worlds a
nd the world at large.
Women are the real deal.
May the Spirit of Wisdom guide you.
